This is part of the Multiclass Series. For more base classes, click their titles to visit their post.
In Dungeons & Dragons, you can play anything from a Half-Orc Sorcerer to a Halfling Rogue. However, for some people, that isn’t enough. That’s when we get into “Multiclassing”. Basically you decide that you want to be trained in two different classes, and become something new altogether.
Here are ideas for every multiclass. Sometimes you get the same character type regardless of which one you start with, but sometimes that can change the style from a narrative standpoint.
Credit where credit is due: PeteNutButter posted an excellent “Ultimate Optimizers Multiclassing Guide” on the Giant In The Playground forums. His guide did a lot of groundwork for this piece, as well as rank the new class-combos on a 6 point scale for how well the new class might workout in gameplay.
We won’t be going into Multiclassing rules, because you can find that yourself, but if something doesn’t make sense, ask your DM if you can just Homebrew it a little.
I also want to mention, that these are not all necessarily compatible in terms of abilities and power, these are more the narrative background to different multiclasses. Roleplay, not Roll Play.
You worship your god whole-heartedly, and with that worship, your god has granted you powers to help those around you. However, it seems your skills are merely reactionary, perhaps it is time for you to take a more…active role in the situations you tend to find yourself. Lets see if there are other ways you can serve your Lord.
Cleric Into…
Barbarian = Fanatic

Your god is the true god! No one can tell you otherwise! However, when you try to show them the truth, your truth, they don’t listen! They continue to ignore what they must do! If they won’t listen to you, then they are only in your way. You must destroy them, so that others see it is your god who is true. Why else would you be the one left standing?
Cleric – Tempest Domain
Bard = Evangelist

Your god is the true god! Others don’t listen to you when you tell them the truth, your truth! However, you don’t resort to violence, that is the opposite of what your god says. You would be becoming the very thing you detest. Therefore, you learn other ways, happier ways to spread the word of love and life that your god has brought to you. If you can make others happy, then you are doing your work.
Bard – College of Lore
Druid = Shaman

You use the power of your god to heal others. You enjoy your work, and you want to learn how it works. Surely, your god has put things on this planet for you to continue their work. You fall into what others call Holistic Medicine, but you know that as long as it works, and you are helping those in need, that your god smiles down on you.
Cleric – Nature domain
Druid – Circle of the Land
Fighter = Battle Cleric

You want to heal others. You realize that the place people get hurt most of all is on the battlefield. It’s ugly, seeing people bring pain to one another, but that is where you can do the most good. You just want to make sure that you are safe in the process, because if you get hurt, who’s going to help you?
Cleric – War Domain
Fighter – Protection & Battle Master / Eldritch Knight
Monk = Sacred Fist

You have learned how to heal others. But what is it you are healing? Yes you heal their wounds, but wounds affect more than just your body. You study Ki, the life force within all people. It isn’t enough to remove the gash on the outside, you must restore their Ki on the inside as well.
Cleric – Life Domain OR Light Domain
Paladin = Apostle

You believe in your god wholeheartedly. However, you know there are forces that work every day to defeat that which you believe. Therefore, you have decided that just healing your disciples isn’t enough, you need to help stop those who wish to extinguish the flame of faith you bring to the world. You will fight for your god in every way you know how.
Cleric – War Domain
Paladin – Protection & Oath of the Ancients
Ranger = Nature Acolyte

You believe that this world was put here by your god, and it is your duty to defend it. Defend it from those that would destroy it for their selfish needs. You focus on life and restoration, not necessarily on the destruction of society. Nature is not a destructive force, why should you be?
Cleric – Nature Domain
Ranger – Defense & Beast Master
Rogue = Chaordic

You are here to cause chaos. Your god stands for some things, yet despises others. Your job is to use your powers that your god has given you, to bring down that which goes against what you believe and stand for. As long as your god is by your side, nothing will stop you from stopping them.
Rogue – Arcane Trickster
Cleric – Trickery Domain
Sorcerer = Sanctite

You have done good work for your god. You have served them well. As a result, the imbue in you powers of your own, so that not every action you attempt goes through them. The ultimate sign of trust.
Sorcerer – Wild Magic
Warlock = Conspirator

You work for a god, but sold your soul to a devil? You use powers from above as well as below? What are you planning? Whose side are you on? Will you lean too far to one side and have it all taken away from you? You had better be careful…
Cleric – Tempest / Trickery Domain
Warlock – Pact of the Tome
Wizard = Ultimate Healer

You know how to heal, because your god wills it. However, you want to learn how it all works yourself. So you study the magic that recreates divine power. You aren’t necessarily doing this to spite your god, as much as out of respect, you want to be able to heal more, and better.
