D23 Star Wars Recap – 2019

There is so much coming out of Disney lately, that we at The Nerdd are trying to follow, that we had to split up the D23 Recap into three pieces. On Monday we had all of the Marvel news. Today we are covering Star Wars, and on Friday will be…everything else?

Rise of Skywalker

There are a lot of movies coming out from Star Wars in the upcoming years.

As a reminder, first this December we will be getting The Rise of Skywalker, the final film in the Sequel Trilogy. Afterwards, we have two more trilogies planned, one by Rian Johnson (director of The Last Jedi), and one by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (head writers of Game of Thrones).

D23 not only gave us a poster, but also a teaser for Rise of Skywalker. And yes, that is Emperor Palpatine in the background.

There is a lot to unpack here, and no solid plot can be construed. All you can really take from this are theories, and there are plenty of places online that do theories, so we’ll leave that to them.

The only other thing of note, regarding movies, is that there are now official names for the three trilogies and their coinciding shows.

  • Prequel Trilogy > Age of Republic
    • Phantom Menace
    • Attack of the Clones
    • Revenge of the Sith
    • Clone Wars
  • Original Trilogy > Age of Rebellion
    • A New Hope
    • Empire Strikes Back
    • Return of the Jedi
    • Solo
    • Rogue One
    • Obi-Wan Kenobi
    • Star Wars Rebels
    • Cassian Andor
    • The Mandalorian
  • Sequel Trilogy > Age of Resistance
    • The Force Awakens
    • The Last Jedi
    • The Rise of Skywalker
    • Star Wars Resistance
    • Galaxy’s Edge (Disneyland)

Shows

First, let’s get caught up with ongoing shows.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars was a well received and loved series, following Anakin and Obi-Wan between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, showing how Anakin started to give into his anger more and more, as he falls to the Dark Side. Unfortunately, the show was on Cartoon Network, and was cancelled, and the show never got to have a clear ending. Well Disney has decided to make a final seventh season, which will stream on Disney+, allowing the story to hopefully lead right into Revenge of the Sith.

Then, Star Wars Resistance, an animated show on Disney Channel and Disney XD will get a second and final season. This follows a pilot who spies on the First Order right before the events of The Force Awakens.

Next, the movie we have all been asking for since they announced their anthology series with Rogue One, will be a Disney+ series, but we’ll love it just the same. Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor is returning to the role, and the series will take place roughly seven years after the end of Revenge of the Sith, and will answer the two questions we all had:

  • “What was Obi-Wan doing all that time?”
  • “Why did he get so old? Seriously, from 35 year old Ewan McGregor to 63 year old Sir Alec Guinness in 19 years? What happened there?”

Also based on pre-existing movies, we will get a prequel to a prequel. That’s right, Rogue One prequel series Cassian Andor, featuring the titular character as well as Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO. I didn’t know you could have a prequel to a prequel that anyone would care about, but I’m willing to give it a shot.

Lastly, something we didn’t know we needed in our lives, but now we desperately do. The Mandalorian follows a Boba Fett-type bounty hunter, in what is being described as a “Western Samurai” series, this show looks amazing. This is probably what I’m most excited for going forward with Star Wars.
