A lot of news has come out regarding the Sony Marvel Universe lately. Here is a recap for those of you who might have missed out.
ICYMI
Sony lends Spider-Man film character Peter Parker via Tom Holland in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and its sequel.

Sony is currently planning Sony Marvel Universe’s first film, with Tom Hardy playing Venom, as well as upcoming project Silver & Black.

SMU will be completely separate from the MCU.

What Does This Mean?
This means we are going to have to have a series of films starring Spider-Man characters that is separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So that leaves the Sony Marvel Universe with a couple of options. In order of worst idea to best, these are seven of the possibilities:
7) Have Tom Holland play Spider-Man in both, while pretending the other doesn’t exist.

6) Get another actor to play Peter Parker for the SMU, thus making it the fourth Peter Parker in a just over a decade.

5) Bring back Andrew Garfield, leaving it with three actors, but still alternating between two of them – not unlike Quicksilver.

4) Reference Spider-Man without ever showing him, making it feel like an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

3) Bring on a new actor to play Spider-Man, but as Miles Morales, the African-American boy who took up the mantle after Peter Parker died. However, excluding Donald Glover, a huge proponent in the popularity of Miles Morales, would feel disrespectful. But the inclusion would cause confusion, as he is already in Homecoming.

2) Completely re-write the backstory for these characters, as to avoid the Spider-Man character entirely, which is the main reason people care about these characters in the first place.

1) Have the center of it be Spider-Women, Spider-Gwen, or Silk. This would keep it in the same vein, while also having a female main hero in the world, even if she isn’t the protagonist of the stories.

As you can see, none of these options are great, but we’ll just have to wait and see what Sony is going to do with their new SMU.
Editor: They went with option 2, rewriting character backstories to not include Peter Parker.
