Fall is usually when we get into the “Oscar-bait” movies, films that are clearly going for awards. There are a couple here for sure, but I’m not sure I’ll be in the theater a ton this season. Not to mention that some of the movies at the bottom of the list will be potentially delayed due to the Writer/Actor Strikes in Hollywood right now.
September 22
Expend4bles

The Expendables will square up against: an arms dealer who commands the might of a massive private army.
If a bunch of washed up action stars want to hang out and make a bad movie for funsies, more power to ’em.
September 29
Saw X

Chasing a promising procedure that would allegedly cure his cancer, John Kramer heads towards Mexico to go through an experimental treatment, only to find out he was prey for a scam. Now, the scammers becomes the prey on Jigsaw’s new game.
This franchise started strong, grew to a cool series, but has since stagnated into repetition and redundancy.
October 6
Foe

Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior’s family for generations, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger shows up at their door with a startling proposal.
Is this a prequel to the Black Mirror episode “Beyond the Sea” where Aaron Paul lives on a farm, goes to space, and leaves a robot him behind to live with his wife?

October, Friday the 13th!
Divinity

Centers on two mysterious brothers, who abduct a mogul during his quest for immortality. Meanwhile, a seductive woman helps them launch a journey of self-discovery.
I think they found this in a time capsule from the ’60s.
October 20
Killers of the Flower Moon

Members of the Osage tribe in the United States are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

A troubled security guard begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. During his first night on the job, he realizes that the night shift won’t be so easy to get through. Pretty soon he will unveil what actually happened at Freddy’s.
It seems we’ve finally gotten out of the video game movie curse! Granted, I’ve never played the indie horror game, but this looks neat.
November 3
While there are a few movies out, they all seem to be like horror B-movies that actually come out on Halloween, and nothing really that you’ll feel like you missed out on. The downside to releasing horror movies on Halloween, is that the very next day people want to get into an Autumn/Thanksgiving mood.
November 10
The Marvels

Carol Danvers gets her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, forcing them to work together to save the universe.
The MCU is losing their fanbase rapidly, and audiences didn’t like the first Captain Marvel. Add in two side characters from different Disney+ shows, I’m not sure this will be very popular.
November 17
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Coriolanus Snow mentors and develops feelings for the female District 12 tribute during the 10th Hunger Games.
The original movies were really good, and kicked off an era of YA dystopian fiction. I’m willing to give this a shot.
November 24
Napoleon

The film takes a personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte’s origins, and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor viewed through the prism of his addictive, and often volatile, relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.
A drama about Napoleon Bonaparte sounds boring. A drama about Napoleon Bonaparte directed by Ridley Scott sounds amazing.
Wish

Wish will follow a young girl named Asha who wishes on a star and gets a more direct answer than she bargained for when a trouble-making star comes down from the sky to join her.
It seems like the idea is to be the quintessential, ultimate culmination of 100 years of Disney storytelling, but instead it feels like it’s the most watered down generic Disney story.
December 1
Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla appears in post-World-War-II Japan, which is at its low point at zero, and knocks the country down one to the negatives.
It’s interesting, because Godzilla was already a metaphor for the atomic bomb, so will this amplify that metaphor, or merely double dip and be too on-the-nose?
December 8
Poor Things

The incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.
A modern Frankenstein, but adding gender and misogyny to amplify the modern? That is a fascinating concept. Will the execution be just as fascinating, or will it get lost in the weird?
December 15
Wonka

The story will focus specifically on a young Willy Wonka and how he met the Oompa-Loompas on one of his earliest adventures.
I have a theory that this project was originally meant to be a gritty reboot, so they cast the Timothée Chalamet, but then they decided to switch to a sincere story. Chalamet is wonderful, but I don’t see him as whimsy.
