DC FanDome 2020 – Recap

With San Diego Comic Con being a bit of a bust this year, DC decided to throw their own virtual convention, to make all of the announcements. I’ve got to say, I’m super excited for the future of DC movies (and video games). Let’s get into it.

The Batman

First of all, we have the big news! We got our first trailer for The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis, John Turturro, and Jeffrey Wright, this amazing cast is going to bring a new side of Batman to the big screen. Not only is this the youngest (adult) Bruce Wayne we are getting on screen, it’s also the most emo (Darkness, No Parents). The villain in this movie won’t be The Joker, like it so often is, but it seems from the trailer that the main villain will actually be The Riddler. Batman won’t be able to punch his way through this, so it seems we’ll be getting our full on “World’s Greatest Detective” side of Batman finally!

Gotham P.D.

This was announced a few weeks ago, but for those of you that missed it, a TV series has been announced, that will be a prequel series to The Batman. Gotham P.D. will be written by the same guy that did Boardwalk Empire, a political crime drama on HBO, which sounds like a wonderful starting point for this DC cop procedural. We might be getting a little overboard with the Batman prequel stories (Gotham, Pennyworth) but if this ties directly into the movie, it might be worth it anyway.

Batman: Gotham Knights

Another Batman video game! I am a huge fan of the Arkham games, and while this doesn’t seem to be a direct sequel to those, I still think Gotham Knights will learn a lot from those amazing games.

Gotham Knights is an open-world, action RPG set in the most dynamic and interactive Gotham City yet. In either solo-play or with one other hero, patrol Gotham’s five distinct boroughs and drop in on criminal activity wherever you find it.

This looks like a ton of fun, with four different play styles to choose from (Red Hood, Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing). I hope that “with one other hero” means we can get some couch co-op going, because so many modern games have been sorely lacking that. Either way, that Court of Owls bit adds in a nice level of detective style gameplay as well.

The Suicide Squad

This sequel remake reboot whatever you want to call it, will have a handful of the cast of the first Suicide Squad, such as Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Amanda Waller and Captain Boomerang, but is adding Taika Waititi, Idris Elba, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, John Cena, Sean Gunn, and Peter Capaldi. Directed by the same guy that did Guardians of the Galaxy, this movie is going to be absolutely insane. Hopefully they can avoid some of the pitfalls that the first Suicide Squad fell into.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

The second video game announced, follows these same heroes. It seems that people can’t get enough of Harley Quinn, even when her projects aren’t always the most well received. Similar to in Gotham Knights, this game has four playable characters (Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, King Shark), each with their own playstyle, as well as a choice between solo play or up to four-player co-op. This game is actually made by the same people that did the Arkham games, however with a very different style and aesthetic. This I’m not as certain about, but the concept certainly intrigues me. Is it an Injustice style premise? Either way, being the villains opens up a lot of gameplay opportunity that is avoided when being the “heroes.”

Justice League: The Snyder Cut

For some people, this is the moment they’ve been waiting for. The famed “Snyder Cut.” For those of you that missed out, while Zack Snyder was in the middle of creating Justice League, his daughter passed away, and he left the project. To finish the film, the studio brought in Joss Whedon, of Avengers fame. Of course, this isn’t The Avengers, and what ended up in theaters was not Snyder’s vision. So after much fan outrage, Snyder was allowed to go back to what he filmed, and reedited the movie to be closer to his original vision. Whether or not this means the movie will be any better remains to be seen.

Wonder Woman 1984

The second Wonder Woman film is coming out soon! Like October 2 soon. The first movie is currently my favorite of the Worlds of DC films thus far, so I’m excited to not only see how they grow from that, but also to see Kristen Wiig in a comic book role.

The Flash

So far, we only know three things about The Flash movie, starring Ezra Miller. First, this movie is (probably) going to be the Flashpoint storyline, in which Barry Allen goes back in time to save his dad from being wrongfully accused for the murder of his wife, Barry’s mom. This has been explored in The Flash TV show, where Ezra Miller’s flash made an appearance, as well as two different Supermans. Similarly, in the new movie, there will be two Batmans, with both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck playing different versions of Superman.

The Flash Season 7

Speaking of The Flash TV series, a trailer for season 7 was released at FanDome as well. While we don’t know much, we have the official synopsis below.

Flash will ultimately defeat Mirror Master. But in doing so, he’ll also unleash an even more powerful and devastating threat on Central City: one that threatens to tear his team—and his marriage—apart.

Black Adam

Lastly, we have a teaser for Black Adam, the origin story for the main villain against Shazam. This trailer is mainly just concept art and a voice over by Black Adam himself, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It won’t be until after we see Black Adam that we will get the Shazam vs. Black Adam movie.

There is so much to be excited for, and with a lot of people prepared to get off the Marvel Hype-Train, it seems DC is eager to pick up that audience. There’s even rumor that DC is going to run the next decade of blockbusters, similar to how Marvel ran the last decade.
