Switch and The Redemption

This is a Guest Post by The Brown Messiah

Well, Ohh Wiee!

Today sure was a good day for some nerd news. Nintendo announces their new console, more Zelda footage, and a tease to what could possibly the most anticipated game for the last six years: Red Dead Redemption 2.

Nintendo continues to the trend of leading us into the next generation of video gaming. The Nintendo Switch is the first console of the 9th generation of home video gaming. At first glance my thought was that it was a prettier version of the Wii U, and after watching the video I remain with this conclusion. Nintendo has definitely stepped it up. The new Switch game pad is a slimmer and cleaner version of the Wii U game pad with some obvious upgrades. The pad looks slightly bigger than a Playstation Vita. The two side controllers detach from the center display and can be used in tandem much like how the Wii’s nunchuck and WiiMote worked or you can grab a friend and have a two player adventure. Don’t worry, the center display has a kickstand on the back. This seems to be the biggest development. While at home you will be able to enjoy your games like Mario, Zelda, and even Skyrim in glorious 1080p, on the go may not be the case. Your games will still look good, but it sure won’t be the same experience as at home. As it shouldn’t be, but it is nice to see Nintendo taking the mobile option into consideration. It’s nice to know that if I want to throw down in some Mario Kart while I’m waiting for my flight or on a long road trip I’ll be able to.

If you’re only excited for Mario Kart or Zelda, just wait. Nintendo also announced a huge line up of developers and publishers that are already working on games for the new console. Big names that have previously worked with Nintendo consoles include Activision, Capcom, and EA make their return. But other companies such as Bethesda and Epic Games now join the fray.

Bethesda is the one I see being more impactful. Just think of how cool Skyrim will be with a tablet in front of you? From crafting to alchemy there are so many things you can do with the game pad! I am beyond stoked for Skyrim! One thing I love to see is that Nintendo still commits itself to bring the players what they love. Games. With all the new developers and how they have changed up the peripherals, Nintendo keeps doing amazing work.

Along with the big news about Nintendo Switch we got two new trailers I wanna touch on. With the Switch, a gameplay trailer for the next installment of The Legend of Zelda with Breath of the Wild. This game is highly anticipated as it is the first real dive into a larger more interactive open world format of game play for The Legend of Zelda. Crafting weapons, hunting, and brewing potions will now be a feature to enhance gameplay. Those who know me know that I love The Legend of Zelda and claim it to be my favorite video game franchise so you can bet your dollar I’ll be pre-ordering this and the Nintendo Switch.

The last trailer that made a splash today was the greatly anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2. After teases on Monday through Facebook, Rockstar Games announced that a sequel to their extremely successful western game Red Dead Redemption was in development and a trailer would be released on Thursday. This morning we got a peak at what could be possible gameplay footage from the game. The trailer wasn’t very forthcoming. Simply shots of landscapes of the old west and frontier where we left John Marston. Seven characters appear and end the trailer by riding off into the distance. All of the footage looks spectacular and wouldn’t be surprised if it was in game footage as Rockstar has a history of showing a lot of in game footage with their trailers. No matter the case I am very excited to play this game when it launches. Just not excited for the year I have to wait.

  1. Great post! Something tells me the Switch is going to be absolutely HUGE!! A powerful portable console with all of Nintendo’s great games in one place? No more splitting between console and handheld? Sign me up!

      1. Right?! I puts dozens of hours into Skyrim back on the PS3, but never even finished the campaign because I kept getting distracted with the various sidequests. Skyrim on the go would be fantastic because it’ll mean I can quest on the go instead of waiting until I’m home. I can’t wait to see what other games we’ll get from 3rd parties 😀

That said, do you share your posts on any other websites? I work over at Creators .Co (we’re part of Movie Pilot and Now Loading) and this is the sort of content that makes for an interesting read. If you were open to the idea of posting your work on our sites in addition to also having your blog/site here, I’d be more than happy to help you get started. My e-mail and more info can be found on my page. (o^.^)b
