Visit Your Local Comic Shop

With a Nerdd holiday tomorrow, now is the time to check out your local comic shop! That’s right, tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day!

With comics from Riverdale, Avengers, Stranger Things, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, there’s probably a free comic that you’ll enjoy!

But that’s not the only reason to visit your local comic shop.

New Comics

Every Wednesday, there are new comic books for you to check out. Just like how movies come out on Friday nights, comics come out Wednesdays. This is a great time to see what stories are being told, with plenty of back issues for you to catch up. If you aren’t able to show up on Wednesdays, ask the cashier about their Pull List option. Most shops will actually collect the new comics you want to read each week, and put it in a file just for you. That way when you are able to come in, all of your comics are ready for you, without you searching their store for the stories you want.

Trade Recommendations

Perhaps you don’t like buying individual comics each week, I know I don’t. Instead, you can get Trades, or Omnibus’, or Volumes. Basically instead of getting a single episode, you buy the whole season. We have our recommendations for Marvel, DC, and Others here on The Nerdd, but if you want to talk to someone who’s read it, or ask for a specific story you forgot the name of, ask the cashier! Part of their job is to know a lot about a lot of different comics.

Game Nights

Nerdds have lots of hobbies, not just exclusively reading comics. We also enjoy Collectible Card Games (CCGs), Tabletop Roleplaying Games (TtRPGs), and a bunch of other fun stuff! Magic the Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh!, to Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer 40K, there are all sorts of weekly events at your comics shop for you to get into. If you are always bored one night of the week, and looking for something to fill that time slot, your local shop has you covered.

Magic: The Gathering Game Night

It’s hard finding friends as an adult! If you moved out after high school, chances are you’re not friends with them. Not many people live in the town they went to college in. Your coworkers don’t have much in common with you, because most people don’t get the luxury of choosing a job based on your hobbies. If you’re lucky you find some people you like enough at bars, but if your potential friends go to a different bar you haven’t tried yet, where do you make friends with similar interests?

Comic Shops! Especially on game/event nights, people are there specifically to socialize. Talk about the game, compare your Pull Lists, or theories on the next Marvel movie.

How To Find Your Shop?

There are two great ways to find your local shop, one that you can do right now! Go check out and put in your zip code, and it will not only tell you your local shops, but also which ones are participating in Free Comic Book Day!

Another great way to find your local shops, and get to know the people who run them, is by attending your local comic convention! Comic shops from miles around will attend comic conventions, for the sole purpose of meeting you! Talk to the folks running the booth, ask them about the events they run, the kind of customers that choose their shop, comfortable seating areas, everything! Really get a mental image of what their shop is like, what dozens of nearby shops are like, so you can know where you’ll enjoy your time most, even if it means driving a little bit farther.

There are so many reasons to go to your local comic shop, let Free Comic Book Day be the catalyst.
