We’ve all had that moment of “if I were a superhero…”. Then, with the comic and movie Kick-Ass, it helped us think “maybe I CAN be a superhero…”.
Well, you aren’t the only one. There are all kinds of Real Life Superheroes (RLSH), vigilantes who put on a costume, and patrol the streets. I’ve noticed, however, that there are three types of Real Life Superheroes.
Before we begin, The Nerdd believes that the greatest heroes in the world are the men and women of our armed forces. We Support You.
Public Advocates
There are some who have created their own Hero Persona, and travel the streets, but instead of fighting crime, they are dedicated to helping the homeless, or alerting police. They bring hope, and know their limits. These are great citizens, and they deserve your respect.
- Thanatos – Vancouver, Focused efforts on homelessness and poverty
- Redbud Woman – Beijing, Became quickly popular with her distribution of food to homeless
- Life – NYC, Co-Founder of Superheroes Anonymous, distributes “LifePaks” to homeless
- Crimson Fist – Atlanta, Distributes food and clothing to homeless
- Zetaman – Portland, Activist

Untrained Patrollers
These are people who, even though they dress up in flashy costumes, do almost nothing to stop or deter crime. Sometimes they call the police when they see a crime, and then do nothing else. Sometimes they are just in it to feel cool, but just like the attention they get.
- Knight Warrior – Manchester, Radio Talk Show Host
- Mr. Xtreme – San Diego, “Self-Taught Expert”
- The Black Rat – Sydney, Short-film star
- Master Legend – Orlando, Drinks on patrol
- The Eye – Mountain View, Inventor

Actual Vigilantes
The real deals! These are trained vigilantes, who have stopped crimes, actually saved people, and have gotten hurt in the process. These guys are not afraid to get in the fight, because that’s what needs to happen to be a real vigilante. Phoenix Jones is the most famous, and has brought a sense of legitimacy to modern day vigilantism.
- Phoenix Jones – Seattle, MMA Fighter, 130+ Arrests
- Dark Guardian – NYC, Martial Arts Expert
- Shadow – Somerset, Daytime Security Detail
- Seven – Mantova, Focus on sex crimes
- Shadow Hare – Cincinnati, Joined the Army

Superhero Groups
There are a number of Real Life Superhero teams, that fall into all three of these categories. If you are interested in joining the world of Real Life Superheroes, whether an Actual Vigilante or a Public Advocate, see if any of these teams are near you.
- Superheroes Anonymous – Seen on NYT, CNN, NBC, Fox, and more
- Emerald City Heroes – Seattle, 10+ Active Heroes
- Rain City Superhero Movement – Seattle, 13 members, including leader Phoenix Jones
- Capital City Super Squad – DC Based, inactive
- The Black Monday Society – Salt Lake City, 12+ members, including Kansas City Chapter
- Great Lakes Alliance – Minnesota, 5 Members
- Extreme Justice League – Based in San Diego, but with 10 chapters in other states
- Trillium Guards – Ontario, 9 members

If I Were a RLSH
Now, if you’re anything like me, it’s impossible to read a list like this, and not think about what you would do, were you a vigilante.
My name would be Guard Dog, and I would be a mix between Nightwing and Daredevil. Leather clad brawler, with a few items to help me out.

Weapons would be a couple batons/escrima sticks, have handcuffs to make citizen’s arrests, and riding around on a motorcycle.

I would have a loud whistle, as well as an enhanced hearing aid, to mimic the super hearing of canines. The escrima sticks fits with dogs playing fetch, and some black tennis balls, as distractions.

Of course, having training in boxing and Krav Maga would be necessary, in order for me to not fall into the “Untrained Patrollers” group.
If you want to know more about RLSHs, go to this website, do some research on your own, and maybe even come up with your own Hero Persona.
I recommend you reevaluate your sources in who is making a difference on your list.

How can I (besides the getting of a costume and learning martial arts, etc) prepare mentally, you know, for becoming a vigilante if I wanted.

I’d say look into the requirements of being a modern day Bounty Hunter. Knowing *in detail* local laws, specifically about self defense and citizen’s arrest. Bounty Hunting is a modern profession, and if you follow the same legal guidelines as them, you’re probably going to be in the clear.
Also knowing what is and is not illegal *in detail* is going to keep you from getting involved when you shouldn’t be.

Master Legend has a lot of training, from the Air Force, Red Cross, Purple Dragons biker gang. Lots of martial arts training and street fighting experience. He’s one of the best, if not the best.
Also Crimson Fist doesn’t deserve to be on the list. He’s a weak whiny guy who is actually more of a Supervillain.
I should also be on the list because I helped create this community, and I run the Heroes Network, the best group for RLSH.
